X-Sight X-ray Inspection Manager
This month, we'd like to introduce Colm Keanly, who runs our inspection facility and is the first person you'll meet when you visit X-Sight.
Colm has been working at X-Sight since January 2019. Prior to that, he studied Mathematics at Stellenbosch University. He very much enjoys his role here, particularly the wide variety of work and exposure to different industries and applications.
Among his favourite experiences have been:
- Dimensioning for the packaging industry
- Defect finding and analysis
- Imaging fly pupae - particularly challenging because of their small size
- Scanning for the 3D printing industry
Colm completed a VG Studio Max Advanced User course in November/December 2021. This taught him a few new tricks and gave him a deeper understanding of the software, allowing him to produce results more quickly than before.
One of the trickiest parts of Colm's job is dealing with large amounts of data. Huge volumes of data can be generated very quickly, leaving him with the challenge of processing it and moving it around. It can also be challenging when other systems have to run concurrently with CT scanning - for example, keeping ice frozen or drying concrete.
As you will have seen from our social media posts, Colm has scanned many "fun" objects, and he has found it interesting to work up these data sets to make them attractive.
In the future, Colm hopes to apply his experience to a growing variety of research areas.
On a personal note, Colm enjoys listening to and playing music, and he has a keen interest in several sports, especially Formula 1 and cricket. In fact, he claims to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of F1 - please feel free to put him to the test the next time you visit X-Sight!
